Habitat Homes Built in Minnesota

Fourteen homes have been completed by the Catholic Daughters of Minnesota with the 2014 home just completed and the family was welcomed into their new home in Marshall, MN. The groundbreaking ceremony for our 15th home was just held in May. It will be built in Winona, MN., the home of Court Winona #191, the oldest court in the state of Minnesota.

Groundbreaking, Eveleth, MN

Eveleth’s CDA Court St. Margaret is honored to have been chosen as the site for the 2011 CDA Minnesota state Habitat build. Northern St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent partnered with us to build the house. The following is a brief summary of the family and what has been happening to date.Jennifer Chinn is a single mother of four girls. She has lived in our area her whole life (and incidentally her mother is a member of our CDA court). Jennifer has been employed at a local hardware store for the last 5 years. She stated that she feels blessed to have the love and support of her family and is extremely excited and thankful for having been chosen for the Habitat house. It is a dream come true to have a home where she can provide a caring and safe environment for her family. She believes this is a stepping stone to a better future for them.

Jennifer’s girls range in age from 10 to 1. Morgan, the oldest child, is in 5th grade and enjoys volleyball, basketball, skating, dance and girl scouts. She plays the piano and is an alter server at our church. Makayla is 4 years old, is in “headstart” and just started dancing lessons this year. Mariska (Ducky for short) is 3 years old and Meredith just turned 1. They are both very active little children.

Presently the Habitat team has been working with the family to finalize the housing plans and to get permits in order. The lot was donated by our city.

The groundbreaking took place on Sunday, May 22nd at 2:00 PM. City officials, Habitat staff, members of Thrivent and some of the local Protestant churches as well as the officers and some members of our court were present. Our court served coffee after the ceremony in our church hall.

We have been working on organizing three primary committees: communications, food and work groups. We have solicited help from our parish as well as a couple of Catholic parishes in adjacent towns.

June 11th was the first day that volunteer building help was needed. A working schedule has been prepared as well as when food is needed.

With appreciation and blessings,Kathy Bastianelli, Regent
